Family Literacy DayFamily Literacy Day is on January 27, 2012.  This day was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to get our communities involved in raising awareness about the importance of reading and doing so as a family.  Children become readers on the lap of their parents, and their love of reading is fostered by their teachers at school.  Just taking 15 minutes a day to read a book, newspaper, magazine, a recipe, the back of a cereal box, playing a game can help to improve your child’s literacy.

Munsch Masterpiece

In Saskatchewan, join the Regina Literacy Network Literacy Hub in celebrating Family Literacy Day as they will be hosting a Regional “Read in” Week, Munsch Masterpieces, and Movies and Munsch.

The Regina Public Library is promoting family literacy through Journey to Learning Passport.  Visit your local library to receive a passport.  Complete at least one activity and return it by January 27th to receive a free graphic novel and for a chance to win an e-reader.

Or download a Journey to Learning Passport from ABC Life Literacy Canada, complete at least five activities before January 27th, and register it online for a chance to win prize packs.  A few activities listed on the Journey to Passport are sort colours and count the number of items in each load of laundry, follow a recipe together, and read street names and think of animals that begin with the same first letter of each street.

Other ways you can participate in Family Literacy Day:

  • Read.  Literacy may begin with an L, but it starts with YOU.

For a child, the more time spent with a parent reading aloud increases his or her level of attachment, enhances a sense of security, and imparts the knowledge that their parent feels they are worthwhile people with whom to spend time (How to Raise a Reader, 1987).
